Case 1 - Initial examination of patient with acute asthma

LOOK FOR

• Consciousness stage
  Cyanosis
  Work of breathing
                  - Sternomastoid
                  - Intercostal in-drawing

• Respiratory rate
  Equality of chest movement

LISTEN FOR

• Words per breath, e.g. unable to speak/single words/phrases/sentences
  Wheezing (no stethoscope)

NOTE

If the patient is cyanotic or in a state of depressed consciousness outside of hospital, have someone call an ambulance ('asthma, red alert, location details') while treatment is started.
