Sukarti, aged 3, presents with malaise, fever and an upper respiratory tract infection with a non productive cough. Her anxious mother is concerned because Sukarti had a febrile convulsion 6 months ago. Her father had two convulsions at the same age but none since then. Sukarti is otherwise well.

On examination she is normally developed and looks healthy, but is irritable, has a slightly reddened throat, a clear nasal discharge and a temperature of 39.0 C (oral).
