in a patient having two or more previous episodes of either mania or
depression. The frequency and severity of episodes, the age of the patient,
concurrent medical illness and compliance need to be taken into account.
Treatment may be time-limited (3 to 5 years) or indefinite depending
on previous illness history, response to medication, age of the patient
and tolerability of the medication.
