As in younger adults, the elderly tend to tolerate the SSRIs better than TCAs. This finding is based on fewer anticholinergic effects, little or no adverse effects on cognition in recommended doses, and minimal cardiovascular effects.

The TCAs vary with respect to side effect profile, but certain adverse effects such as orthostatic hypotension, sedation, and cardiac toxic effects can be particularly problematic in older persons.
