The elderly tolerate tricyclic antidepressants better than SSRIs.
Author's
answer: False.
As
in younger adults, the elderly tend to tolerate the SSRIs better than
TCAs. This finding is based on fewer anticholinergic effects, little or
no adverse effects on cognition in recommended doses, and minimal cardiovascular
effects.
The
TCAs vary with respect to side effect profile, but certain adverse effects
such as orthostatic hypotension, sedation, and cardiac toxic effects can
be particularly problematic in older persons.
