Abstract

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deciency is a genetic disorder affecting people at any age and is thought to affect 400 million people worldwide. It is normally asymptomatic but can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. There are recognized factors that need to be avoided. Detection of the disorder, avoidance of provoking factors, management of the symptoms and any complications are essential to ensure that people with G6PD deficiency can remain as healthy as possible.

Key words: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase; G6PD deciency; Red blood cells; Hemolysis; Neonatal jaundice; Fava beans; Malaria; Primaquine.
