In
any new presentation of depression it is important to first consider and
exclude an organic medical illnesses. Depression may follow acute infection,
particularly influenza, and is a recognised feature of a number of illnesses
including hypothyroidism and chronic fatigue syndrome. In older people
it is associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease.
